Proverbs
22:8
He
that soweth iniquity shall reap vanity: and the rod of his anger shall fail.
If
we plant sin in our lives we shall reap vanity.
Vanity means emptiness. Things
can seem fun or satisfying at the moment but afterwards we feel empty and
ripped off. If we plant righteousness we
will reap satisfaction. Doing the right
things causes us to have a sense of purpose and accomplishment. We know that we have done that which the
Lord, from heaven, would want done on earth.
When we sin we are never better off.
Sometimes at the moment it feels like we are going to have something
really good. This is usually so short
lived and the emptiness that lingers on is much weightier than the pleasure we
might receive while sinning. Sure, sin
is pleasurable for a season. We
wouldn’t choose sin if there wasn’t something we desired in it, but that is the
original lie the devil gave back in the garden.
He had Eve notice the immediate pleasure of the moment and lied to her
about the consequences. Let us have the
abundant life that the Lord has promised us.
Let us not yield our members as slaves of sin and end up empty. Let us choose the way of escape and watch our
lives begin to bring forth the satisfaction available to us in Christ.
