Proverbs 27:9
Ointment and perfume rejoice the heart:
so doth the sweetness of a man's friend by hearty counsel.
Hearty counsel is like good perfume. Good perfume is not cheap. It is made up of quality ingredients and seldom watered down by other cheap additives. It is usually made of some sort of substance that, when crushed, gives forth a fragrance that lasts longer than when it was not. The counsel we give should be a result of opinions that have been crushed by the weight of God’s counsel. Our words to another must not be watered down and made to be close to the truth and yet not the truth. When a friend seeks our advice, we should be slow to speak and quick to listen to what our Lord has to say about it. We should rejoice our friend’s heart with the fragrance of advice rooted in our Savior who was crushed for our iniquity. We should pray with them and seek to discover what God has to say. Then we will leave them with truth that will go on and permeate future situations as well.
