Ps 83:16
Fill their faces with shame;
that they may seek thy name, O Lord.
This is a
prayer that the psalmist is praying about his enemies. We get a glimpse of the heart that the Lord
has for His enemies. The shame that is
desired is shame that produces a seeking.
The Lord will use shame in people’s lives to bring them to a place where
regrets lead to repentance, embarrassment leads to embracing and consequences
lead to commitment. The shame that the
Lord allows is good for us. It speaks of
a conscience touched by a holy God and when we begin to sense shame we begin to
sense surrender. Shame can be our friend
when it produces this sort of looking up and purposed pursuit of God. Whether it is our enemies or we ourselves, may
the shame associated with evil actions produce the response of seeking God and
His ways. Oh Lord, it is You that
mankind needs and no matter how evil others have been to us or we, towards you,
let shame work a work of humility and dependence upon You.
