Proverbs
23:1-3
When
thou sittest to eat with a ruler, consider diligently what is before thee:
And
put a knife to thy throat, if thou be a man given to appetite.
Be
not desirous of his dainties: for they are deceitful meat.
When
we are around people of influence or affluence we must be cautious not to take
it casually. We should not be there
taking in the dainties as if we are mesmerized by it all and wanting to get the
most our flesh can get from the opportunity.
If the Lord has allowed us to eat with someone of importance, we must
not be there with a carnal mindset. We
must seek the Lord as to why He has allowed us to be there. Are we supposed to learn from their
example? Are we supposed to grasp the
fleeting glory of man that one day he is in his glory and the next his shell is
empty, his soul facing judgment? Are we
there to reach someone with the matter of fact truth of Jesus’ sacrifice and
soon return? Are we in the room to absorb
some sort of truth or understanding through it all? We are not to look at these opportunities as
a time to satisfy our appetites. We
might end up envious and find ourselves in slippery places. Let us be sober minded and consider
diligently what is put before us.
