Proverbs 19:6-7
Many will
intreat the favour of the prince:
and every
man is a friend to him that giveth gifts.
All the
brethren of the poor do hate him: how much more do his friends go far from him?
he pursueth them with words, yet they are wanting to him.
Quality and
committed friendships are not common. In
fact, apart from Christ, they are almost impossible. We may see celebrities enjoying the accolades
and attention of others but they always have in the back of their mind, “Why
does this person want to be around me?”
They have money and nice homes.
They have popularity and attention.
I have heard on more than one occasion a celebrity declare their
loneliness when they realize the relationships they have may be nothing more
than people seeking their own agendas rather than caring and loving them.
Let us
learn from this and remember to cultivate and nurture relationships that offer nothing
apparent in return to us. Love does not
seek its own. Let us call the ones who
may in fact be a bit more draining than refreshing. Let us invite to dinner those who cannot
invite us back. Let us be sure that our
love is based on a value system determined by God. Let us spend those wee hours in the morning
with that colicky baby trusting that our love will establish her in His
love. Let us listen to that toddler go
on and on about his adventures and know that we are being a friend to him that
represents the heart of God. Let us give
expecting nothing in return. We will
find that the love flowing through us to the other will indeed refresh us too.
